Partypoker, 888 UK's highest profile web poker brands 04/06/2009

Jon Parker

Partypoker and 888 are the UK’s most visible poker websites, a ranking of the top 20 online bingo brands seen by eGaming Review exclusively has revealed.

The research by search engine optimisation (SEO) marketing company Greenlight shows that Partypoker and 888 were both seen on the first page of results for 54% of searches for poker-related terms such as ‘online poker’, ‘poker chips’ and the word ‘poker’ on Google UK in April, the last month for which reliable statistics are available. Google is the world's dominant search engine, hosting 90% of web searches.

Pokerstars was in second place, appearing on the first page for 40% of searches, followed by TheFreePokerRoom, which appeared on the first page for 61%. The full list of the top 20 sites are displayed below.

However the most visible site for poker searches, and the only site to appear on the first page in more than half of searches, is online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. Video sharing site YouTube also made an appearance in the top 20, at number 16.

The results reveal how much more competitive poker SEO is than bingo. As reported on EGRmagazine.com yesterday, matching results for bingo searches show leading bingo sites like FoxyBingo, Dreambingo and MeccaBingo achieving a place on the first page in as many as three quarters of bingo searches (more).

Greenlight chief executive Warren Cowan said: “In bingo there is a very strong focus on a very narrow group of terms delivering very big coverage. But if you look at poker there is a much large number of terms to focus on, preventing sites from dominating as easily.”

“The greater number of search terms and the more evenly they are distributed between searches, the less likely it’s going to be that a site can dominate.”

More than a third of those who searched for poker sites during the period entered the simple term ‘poker’ (40%). ‘Online poker’ was the next most popular term (8%), followed by ‘poker chips’ (5%), ‘free poker’ and ‘poker hands’ (3% each). ‘Poker table’, ‘free online poker’, ‘poker games’, ‘poker tables’, ‘poker stars’ and ‘play poker’ all contributed 2% each.

“There are only three major points of real estate that bingo providers need to focus on, but if you look at poker it’s about 12. That’s why in poker you have much less ownership,” Cowan added.

I like pokerstars but nothing beat the 3d graphics in PKR Poker. Check it out.
