EGR Morning Snapshot: Ryanair, PartyPoker; Chili Gaming; Betstone; Betfair and backhanders... 25/06/2009

Irish budget airline Ryanair has resurrected plans for in-flight online gambling.

PartyPoker is to create its first ever grassroots poker team to compete at major poker events, and has sponsored UK player Ian Frazer as the new team’s first member.

Malta-based gaming operator Chili Gaming is looking for a bingo network and has chosen Parlay Entertainment as its bingo software provider.

Irish server based gaming business BetStone has opened an office in Mexico City to service its customer base in Latin America. The move is intended to enable faster response times to customer requests as well as to allow services to be provided by staff who better understand regional requirements.

The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) is to investigate unusual online betting patterns around Austrian Jurgen Melzer’s straight-sets victory over American Wayne Odesnik in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday, after Betfair reported the match to the TIU. The report followed £1m being gambled on its exchange on a contest which experts say would typically attract roughly £10,000 worth of bets.

The news coincides with the UK government establishing an expert panel to examine the threat of gambling-related corruption in British sport. The panel will be chaired by former Liverpool football boss Rick Parry and is comprised of representatives from the UK Gambling Commission, police, sports governing bodies, lawyers, players and fans.
